Creating a Simple Vbulletin Forum xml Sitemap for Google

Looking at what was available for Vbulletin 3.7.0 at Vbulletin.org for creating xml sitemaps that could be submitted to Google and Yahoo I was not impressed, there seemed to be nothing simple that would not lead to necessary modification in the future

So what I decided to do was see if there was a way to make the archives themselves (displayed in the footer of 3.7 boards) act as accurate sitemap, converted to xml by one of the many free services available, in theory this seemed reasonable and after testing in Google( have not bothered with Yahoo yet, this SE seems to not require much help in indexing ) I have found it works well.

Bear in mind the Vbulletin forum tested is a new board and has not the many thousands of pages of content , that an established board may have. So to qualify this, would say it works well on new boards untested on established board .

What to do

* Establish an account with Google Webmasters Tools and verify your site ( can be done independently of this service but recommended)
* Login to the Vbulletin Admin Panel
* VBulletin Options : Search Engine Friendly Archive
* Check Yes : Forum Archive Enabled
* Check No : Display Simple Views of Threads (you want links directly to content)

I then used the free sitemap generator at www.sitemapdoc.com there are many such sites, choose one you like the look of, this one it has various filters you can put in place

The base URL you place in the form is that of your archive index page , if you don't know what it is , go to the archive and copy it from your browser address bar

Most of these sites will only index 500 pages as your site map( remember you can add several xml sitemaps to Google ) You can also set frequency of Googlebot return (when you are creating the map ), I set mine to daily and it does return and include any new content .

After the sitemap is created follow insructions and upload to your root directory then go back to Google Webmasters Tools and submit the map,the bots will check it out and immediately report any errors .

* Tip : If you delete a thread or post, leave a link to it , otherwise when Google indexes the sitemap it may come up in the serps as a blank page
